As a founding member of one of the biggest girl groups ever, Destiny's Child, one would think that Kelly Rowland is used to getting attention. However, a lyric in Kanye West's single "Power" has brought the Grammy-winning star even more shine than she bargained for.
"The system broken, the schools closed, the prisons open/ We ain't got nothin' to lose, Motha----er, we rollin'/ Huh? Motha----er, we rollin'/ With some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowlands," 'Ye spits on the track. In an interview with Complex.com, the R&B diva said the line from the popular song has even changed how her pals approach her.
"My friends sometimes greet me like that now, which is really weird," Rowland giggled, after reciting the lyric her homegirls apparently start spitting when they meet up with the singer.
As far as West, Rowland said she was taken aback by the shout-out, which pegs her as a standard of beauty. "To hear him say that, I was just kinda blown away. Dang, no pressure, Kanye," Rowland quipped.
Of course, 'Ye isn't the first lyricist to look to Rowland to lend some sizzle to a project. The singer appeared in 50 Cent's 2009 video "Baby by Me" as a devoted, yet still crazy glamorous, housewife raising a brood of mini 50s. Before the video dropped, Fif explained to MTV News that he coaxed Rowland into appearing in the clip at the last minute because he felt she brought the star power he needed for the Before I Self Destruct visual.
"Kelly was getting ready to fly back to Miami. I was lucky enough to catch her. I kinda begged my way into her doing it," 50 said. "I didn't want to do the normal video situation, where you have the vixen or somebody no one knows from anywhere. I think it intensifies the whole song."
